Titans Chess Club is rounding off her Launch event with the inaugural 2022 Online TitansChamps. A Candidates Arena tournament (to pick the championship contenders) will be played first.

Then, just like the FIFA World Cup, the 16 qualified players (from each category) will compete for their share of a ₦20,000 prize fund through a group stage and championship playoff.

With Championship Candidates Arena play set to begin on November 11th, the TitansChamps will feature one week of entertainment, concluding on November 18th with the championship final.

Here’s all the information you need to follow the 2022 Online TitansChampsπŸ†:

Match Schedule ⏰

Official match times for each game is 8PM except on weekdays, each player can fix favourable times with their opponents.

The dates for each stage of the event are as follows:

  • Candidates Arena: Nov 11
  • Group Stage: Nov 13
  • Quarterfinals: Nov 14 – 16
  • Semifinals: Nov 17
  • Finals: Nov 18

Total Prize Fund: ₦20,000

Each player’s winnings are determined by how far they advance into the TitansChamps.

Group Stage: ₦2,500 prize pool.

Championship Bracket: 7 players, ₦17,500 prize pool.

Tournament Format πŸ†

Candidates Arena πŸ₯·

  • An Arena Tournament would be played first on the day 1 to pick the Candidates to play in the Championships.
  • The top 16 players in the tournament will qualify to play in the Opens Championship
  • Top 16 Female players will progress to Females Championship
  • Top 16 Under 1500 will progress to the Rookie Championships
  • Seeding 1-16 is ranked by players’ performance in the arena tournament.

Group Stage πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘¦β€πŸ‘¦

  • The 16 players (for each category) will be split into four groups of four players each.
  • In this phase, players will face each of the three opponents in their group.
  • Each match will consist of a single 10+5 game.
  • Players will earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss.
  • At the end of group play, each group will be ranked by points accumulated.
  • The top two players advance to the Championship bracket, and the others get knocked out.
  • In the case of a tie on points, the first tiebreak is average Accuracy score across all three games

Championship Brackets (Opens, Female & Rookies)

  • Each bracket will consist of eight players, with predetermined seeding (see bracket below) to ensure competitive equity.
  • All brackets will follow a single-elimination format, with the winner of each match progressing to the next round.
  • The quarterfinals of each Championship bracket will consist of two 10+5 games, where the higher seed playing white first.
  • In the case of a draw, a sudden death 5+0 game will be used to determine a winner, with the higher seed playing with the white pieces.
  • In case of draw in the tiebreaks, the colors will alternate until there is a winner.
  • The semifinals and finals will both consist of two 10+5 games with alternating colors, with the higher seed from group play choosing which color to play first.
  • In the case of a tie, a sudden death 5+0 game will be used to determine a winner, with the higher seed from group play playing with the white pieces.
